Susie and I just had a nice brunch and then went to the farmer’s market in Greenpoint. Its beautiful and breezy out and it got us thinking about where we want to be next. We’re not going anywhere for a while, I’m going back to school and the job is good. But the breezy weather and farmers market made us think about criteria that helps make us happy. Bad weather, cramped spaces and cars make us cranky. We’re looking for suggestions for places with the best breezes, close to the water, farmers markets, bicycle friendly and are affordable. I’d love if bands played within an hour as well.

I've always been around computers and the web. I like to understand the medium, but not to out-geek you (I won't) or make mad cash (I'm cursed by my family - I'm sure multiple fortunes have slipped through my hands.)

I see this as a massive feedback loop. I kind of work in media, and the comments sections in articles have turned the world in which I work upside down.

I started this blog (and then moved onto other platforms) to keep in touch with my friends, and to geek out on products. I'm constantly trying to learn. That being said, my girlfriend inherently gets all of this much faster than I do, and is my bellwether when checking out new things.

I am doing the Friendfeed thing, and its cool, because it allows me to integrate my Flickr sets with my other web activities (mostly Tumblr - my favorite thing on the web since EBay.)

This week, I attempted to catalog 2 cool things on Flcikr that also feed into Friendfeed. The International Branding Expo (all the big brands just doing bang up business) and taking pictures of all of my ticket stubs. I even sent my ticket stub photo set to 15 friends via email. These are people I went to these shows with. I get next to no action on these sets. But I take a pretty picture of sushi I had for dinner tonight, and wamo bango. Comments galore.

The Licensing International Expo 08

I just got back from the Licensing International Expo at the Javtiz center. I read something in the NY Times about old brands being bought by firms that then build the brands back up and this expo was mentioned. I looked it up and registered to attend.

Any time you hear anything about 'well so and so, well its just a BRAND" was represented at the expo. Really weird. Anything in a toy store or on a t-shirt. Was here.

Commentary on what I saw:

Besides Marlyn and Elvis, John Wayne and Jimi had booths. The guys talking shop were saying things like 'yeah, we have this big deal re-issue thing coming out...' I didn't see any Grateful Dead stuff, but come to think of it, their brand has kind of dwindled in the past five years. Or maybe I left San Francisco.

Make t-shirts, coffee mugs...whatever you'd like!"

A Trip to Flushing Meadows park - site of the 64 World's Fair.

Last weekend Susie and I took the 7 to Queens to check out the park. You see the Globe at the center of this park when you are coming into the city from La Guardia (You also see it in the intro to The King of Queens).

Taking a trip to the park and then researching the 64 World's fair has had a stronger effect on me than I thought it would. The 64 World's Fair represented the potential for America's future and is now kind of just a run down park. The 64 World's Fair also became the prototype for Disney World in Florida (and Epcot, I assume), as Disney did 4 of the attractions here. You can read more about the 64 Worlds Fair at Wikipedia.

Susie mentioned wanting outdoor space a few weeks back, so she started looking on craigslist for a new place to live.

She found us a new apartment pretty quickly. The new place has a huge kitchen, three huge rooms and a huge patio (did I mention HUGE?)

And the park where this Flight of the Concords skit was filmed is basically our front yard.

We'll have you over for a bbq asap. We move in on May 1.

Save It For Your Blog (dot com)

A few years ago I registered the url Save It For Your Blog (dot com) thinking I would make t-shirts of the phrase and get rich. I never really did anything with the url so I can't say if I was going to get rich or not. (I tend to think not - phrases on t-shirts don't have the same cache as they did, say in a Wham video from the 80s)

I decided to use the url for my Tumblog. I just officially started using it yesterday, and I love it. Hits that sweet spot between Flickr and this blog.

Alot has been going on, kind of like expected, but one never knows until things pan out. I got my final pay out from the last company I worked for and was made an offer for a new job (a good offer, a job I want, at a company I like).

The lil lady suggested we celebrate. A plate of tacos and a 6 pack of Corona always seems like the way to go and would make us happy. But we decided to go to the best place we could think of.

So I booked Jean Georges for Friday night.

Oh my goodness. This really was the best meal of my life. And for how much a fancy meal can set you back in the city, it really wasn't that ridiculous. Not for everyone, and not for everyday, but definitely a meal I will continue to dream of.

We also bought a bed frame, something I've wanted for years. All of the beds I'd seen were either too expensive or too ugly or to cheap. To quote Goldilocks, this one was just right.

One sacrifice I've had to make with all of the life change is not being able to go to SXSW this year. I thought I would have the time, so I used a voucher and dropped a few hundred dollars on a plane ticket. I called United on Friday to cancel, and was told I would have to eat $400 on the ticket. SO DON'T FLY UNITED. THEY TREAT YOU LIKE SHIT! If you find a cheap deal, use them, but certainly DON'T COUNT ON UNITED.

I've been seeing bunch of flyers on Facebook and the blogosphere as to all of the fun my tech friends are having this week and music friends will have next week. Maybe next year...who knows. I've done it for 10 years, but haven't been back in 4. I may be eating $400 on the plane ticket, but would loose alot more than that in pay if I ditched on my 2nd to last week at this job.

Braised Short Ribs from Alice Water's 'The Art of Simple Food'

I've been meaning to cook something from this Christmas present for a while now, but just got around to making the short ribs this evening. It's going to be pretty cold tonight and this is the perfect winter meal. Its also pretty decedent for being a cheap cut of meat. It just takes some time.

Salt and pepper the raw meat

Prepare the mirepoix and add garlic

Roast the meat for 25 minutes at 450

Add tomatoes, sage, bay leaf, tyme, wine and chicken stock to the mirepoix after you've roasted the meat

Place the meat on the veggies/liquid and place in the oven for another 2 hours.

Take the meat out of the oven

I broiled the meat to give it a crunch.

I then removed all the veggies and used the juice to make gravy for the baked potato.

That was yummy.

Did you know this is what Joey Ramone is singing in Shena is a Punk Rocker? He must mumble the lyrics because it wasn't until I heard Rancid doing the cover yesterday that I learned this. I was digging through our million CDs on Friday night to get some new music for the iPod. I ripped the Ramones tribute record Susie had picked up a few years back (when it came out). I appreciate that Kiss, Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie were all influenced by the Ramones, but why did they end up on this record? The only two redeeming covers were by Rancid and Tom Waits.

It had been a few months since I hung out in the East Village, but I heard the call of cheap wine, new glasses and ramen. You can't call yourself a real New Yorker until you've had to deal with an f'ed up L on a weekend.

The 3rd ave L stop was closed so I decided to walk down my old street (13th btwn 2nd and 3rd) to get to the 1st ave stop. There are 2 major construction projects with a third one scheduled. Weird to see a block that was unchanged for the 3 years I lived there to look so different just 5 months later.

A new condo? building going in where there used to be a random parking lot.

This building (two doors down from my old building) was totally vacated and sealed up.

I won't recognize this street/neighborhood in 5 years.

The Rock and Roll karma of publishing my music diaries continues...

Last week I wrote how after 20 yeas of looking, I finally found an affordable copy of Appetite. The day I publish that piece, Chris and I met for a pint at Tom and Jerry's. Robert Plant comes in with a lady friend for a few pints. We didn't want to bother him, as I was lucky enough to meet him at an AOL Sessions 2 years ago and got him to sign 4 pieces of Zep vinyl. He said that was the first time he had signed Zep 2 on vinyl in over 20 years. Meeting him a second time wouldn't have been as great as meeting Jeff Tweedy in Amsterdam last fall, but it was great to see a icon in the flesh.

I've started blogging about my all time favorite records put out in my life time.

It has been hard. A few days of self doubt. Magnetic Fields and Cat Power have new records that are phenomenal. Wow, their early records changed my life and why didn't I put them on the list? And ELO? I love them as much as (or more?) than the Talking Heads and the Cars. Wings and The Cure too.

Because I discovered these records after I accepted that I am music snob. or I don't really know. All I know is the first list was hard to put together and I listened to those CDs, tapes and mp3s like there was no tomorrow. I wish I could have included L7 and Skid Row too.

Its freezing today (actually below freezing.) I know if Susie and I hung out at the place we would have gone at each other like cats and dogs, so I devised this plan to grab a bite at the local pub. After we had a few Bloody Mary's and played a round of Scrabble I suggested we go to the little 'we're on the verge of being the hip record store in a recently gentrified neighborhood' record store looking for the BetaBand's 3 eps. I think I heard a song of their's in an ad and it won't leave my head.

I start flipping though the vinyl and right away I find ELO's 'Out of the Blue' FOR 5 DOLLARS. Daniel recently played me his recently repressed copy. He paid $25 for it. Heh.

And there she was waiting for me.

Basically this record (this copy, on vinyl) has been like $50+ for the last 20 years. Appetite has sold more than 20 million copies wold wide. There were 25,000 of these things made, 20 YEARS AGO. I now own one. Today is a great day.

I blogged about my favorite 30 records this week, included Appetite in that list, and got the hardest copy of it known to man today for 20 bucks. This never happens.

Purple Rain – Prince
Prince made a whole movie on trying to write one song. All his life’s passion went into writing this song. I saw Prince on New Year’s eve at the Summit from 1998 into 1999. He did like a 4 hour set. Every song on this record is amazing.

Elliott Smith - Elliott Smith
As mentioned in the previous post I had a radio show. I used to tape my show, and Aaron sometimes would listen to the last 30 minutes when he would get up super early. The girl who had her show after me started her show off with Needle in the Hay. I got home and Aaron was so blown away he bought this record. We were in Paris a little after that and went to see him. By the time we got back to America he was pretty big and we went to see him at Liberty Lunch. Aaron buying this record started it all. When I lived in LA, I would see him hanging out at Spaceland. I really wish he didn’t die.

Illinoise - Sufjan Stevens
I saw him on the Michigan tour and made fun of the Boy Scout outfits. I then get to New York and throw a party where a Craig showed up. He said he was helping to make this record and that I should listen to it when came out, that it was going to be great. I got sent an early promo with Superman on the cover and put it on. And listened to it again and again.

Team Boo – Mate of State
I am biased. I was selling tshirts for the Mates right before they went to make this record. I heard HA HA every night for 2 weeks. I liked Mississippi and St Louis the best, mostly because the opening band hated these shows so much.
This record has such strong songs and was so well made, I am blown away every time I listen to it. ‘Middle is gold and gold does not forgive’

The Soft Bulletin – Flaming Lips
And it seemed to cause a chain reaction.
I saw one of the first shows of this tour. I’ve seen more iterations of this show (20+) then any other tour experience I’ve ever seen. For me, it was like going to the circus as an adult. Over the past 9 years, I’ve seen some iteration of what started at the beginning of this tour at least 3 times in each city I’ve lived in (and I’ve lived lots of places) Shit, does that make me a Lip head? A Flaming head? A fearless freak?

Nissa took me to the Yahoo Xmas party they played, and I grabbed Wayne’s boot begging him to play Xmas at the Zoo. He looked down and me and said ‘Josef, we don’t know that song any more, Ronald’s left the band!’

The Cars – The Cars
They could’ve made this album and called it thier greatest hits. I love this band so much I could cry.

First 6 records reviewed

I’ve been listening to a lot of online radio at work and sick of everything in my iPod and been thinking wtf did I like music anyway. I’ve been obsessed with Dub Musics. I haven’t been to a show in forever, and 4 of 5 times someone’s trying connect with me about music I take this route of like ‘you like that – ugh’ or something like that.

This is not to say I only listen to the Einstein of music. I listen to shit. I love shit. MMMBop is one of the greatest songs of all times and Umbrella was the best song put out last year. But Solja Boy’s Crank That was utter crap. It’s the Achy Breaky Heart of hip hop. Maybe his daughter will grow up to be Miley Cyrus.

So I put together a list of my favorite albums that have been put out in my lifetime to share with my friends. I’ve always connected with people thought music, and I think I try to keep up with music still so I can connect with people.

As I put this list together, I realized all of these records had a story. I’ve always wanted to tell the stories behind what the records mean to me. So here I go.

Also, a few friends pointed out that I missed some massive records.

Fugazi’s 13 Songs. Waiting Room is one of the best songs of all time. I was late to the party. I could never claim this band as mine. I hate to be a follower, so I had to cut it.

Anything by Pavement. I own Slanted and Enchanted. I am not sure I could identify a single song from this album if it came on at a bar. I like the hits of Brighten the Corners and Terror Twilight.

Arcade Fire Funeral I love this album but it took a lot of listening and everyone I know to tell me to like this. Can’t say I discovered it. I was moving to New York the day this came out, so I was preoccupied.

Sonic Youth Daydream Nation. I love it. I listen to it. Its more anti/generational than it is good.

Other caveats:
I can’t say one record by Modest Mouse sticks out, since this is an album based list. I’ve always said that since Kurt blew his head off, Modest Mouse was the heir apparent to best band of my generation. He really doesn’t need to be as good as he is anymore, but I don’t think he knows how to suck. I’ve had three run ins with him over the years and he didn’t have to be nice or even pay attention, but he did.

I also wish I knew an album by The Smiths or Guided By Voices, but I discovered the music of these bands in the iPod/Greatest Hits era. My best Bob Pollard story is I was friends with an opening band and was drinking Bob’s tequila back stage while GbV were playing. I was told ‘don’t drink Bob’s tequila.’ When he got off stage, he yelled out ‘Hey who rank my tequila? ‘ When I told him it was me, he said, sit here and drink we me. We talked about music and life for a bit and I gave him my hoodie (I had it customized). I asked him to wear it in a picture. He did in the New York Times a week later, and then in a Gothamist photo last year. 5 years after I gave it to him.

Last but not least, I still really enjoy Death Cab when it comes on, but I am embarrassed when I am reminded that after seeing them in front of 150 people on their 2nd show in San Francisco I said “This band is going to be huge.” I have pictures of me with them. Years later, standing in the back of a 10,000 person show, I was like, “Oh shit.”

I wish I could figure out where Portishead and Massive Attack stood, but history has not been kind to trip hop.

I have also decided I hate/can’t stand Bjork. I own 5 of her CDs, I tried. I tired. She shoved me at the Passerby in the Meat Packing district when I first moved to NYC. I think her music is horrible. Its not musical. But she tries hard and knows all the right people, so I get why she is who she is.

As it takes a lot of memory to pull these stories out, I’m breaking down the list to 6 records per post. This is kind of a double post.

I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One – Yo La Tengo
I was an intern in NYC the summer this record came out and was working at the Tower Records on 4th and Broadway. Other Music was starting to happen and I hated Tower, so I went over there and saw that this record was being promoted so I bought it. I didn’t really understand their sound at first but the more I listened to it, the more I freaked out. We had them at an in store at Tower but I decided to go see Garth Brooks in Central Park that day. One of my greatest rock and roll regrets.

I ended up meeting Georgia and Ira 3 times last summer. Either I was everywhere they were or vice versa. They make good music, but are weird people. Also they were on the last episode of Gilmore Girls season 6 which I plan on watching this weekend.

Keep it Like a Secret – Built to Spill
I wanted to name my fake band ‘In Your Bones’ because of a song off of this record. All non jock males have fake bands. I was an intern for Mercury and this was the cred buzz record out pre SXSW whatever year it came out. I went to see them at La Zona Rosa and was transcended. I also ended up meeting Doug at the Ain’t No Picnic concert in Orange County (best concert of my life – more about that later) years later and bought a t-shirt off of him. We chatted for a bit and it was great.

Being There - Wilco
The fuddy duddies of Austin were into Wilco because of their twang. I was late to the party at first, but I’ve since learned that Jeff didn’t want 45 year old burn outs as fans when they were 28 and wanting to be cool. I was 19 when I saw them at a club I used to promote bands at (LIBERTY LUNCH), and could therefore get in for free and drink (underage and for free). I am not sure I owned anything by them when I went to this show, but I made sure to get this after I left. A friend took an up close picture (and framed if for me) of Jeff years later screaming “I want to thank you for nothing, nothing, nothing at all…”

The White Stripes – The White Stripes
Everyone knew about this band before anyone knew about this band. Seeing DooKoo do the drum part in Broken Bricks kills me. Every time.

Moon Safari – Air
I had a radio show in college and was given a promo of this record. Every Kelly I ever meet I say “Watch the Stars.” Aaron and I saw them on this tour in London and it was amazing. I saw them years later in San Francisco, and they sucked. Ah the beauty and inconsistency of the French. Maybe, I am French?

Fear of a Black Planet – Public Enemy
I wish I could figure out how to use ‘Base, how low can you go’ in a sentence every day. I’ve met Chuck D twice and thanked him both times for changing music. He was giving a keynote at a digital media conference early in my career and I yelled out “Hey Chuck – Bring the noise” He looked over at me and smiled. I was the youngest person in the room and I almost lost my job.

Well we're 5 days into it. And alot's already happened.

We got home from Seattle late Wednesday night. I had a final due on Friday. This was my last assignment as an official MBA student and I wasn't doing so well in the class. We got some noodles from the local Chinese shop that night. I woke up not feeling so hot, but had to push it into the city to drop of the final before heading into the office.

Shouldn't have had those noodles. Some burny/foamy yucky pushed its way out and onto Houston on my way to the office. Before I could get a cup of coffee too! What's up with that!

What they say about the rain and coffee in Seattle is right. We had a great time. Got in on the 27th and stayed at the Moore Hotel. We then went to stay with a friend for a day before heading to Portland.

Portland was great, just as I had imagined. We stayed at the Deluxe. I highy recommend it. We banged up Powell's books. Also highly recommended. We had some yummy weird donuts at a famous place that crushes up candy bars onto donuts. Yum.

Seattle was also filled with books and donuts. We banged up Elliott Bay and Top Pot.

The library done up by Rem Koolhaus is a must see.

I started a new job last week. A video start up in Soho. We launch in late January. I'm sure to post more about it then.

Now the full on Christmas season is upon us.
We saw the Santa rally in Bryant Park as we roamed around the East Village yesterday.

Today was Christmas set up day.
Susie made some ornaments to hang from the ceiling.

Trip to Amsterdam and Berlin

I went to Amsterdam and Berlin last week, and am now just getting to the blog post. I put alot of work into my Flickr set so I will record the highlights here.

I got into Amsterdam early on the Wednesday the 31st and checked into the Botel.

I needed a cup of coffee as I didn't sleep on the plane. I learned on this trip how little sleep I really need. I walked into a coffee shop, and oh yeah, i was in Amsterdam. It kind of caught me off guard because it was 8 in the morning, and I wasn't thinking.

I hiked over to the museum district to check out the Van Gough museum. The city is pretty easy to get around. It was interesting, but I was about to crash. I went back to the hotel for a nap.

I woke up and went in search of an Indonesian rice table (in Dutch, rijsttafel) for dinner.

The food was fun, but is more for a group, then just one person.

Aaron came on Thursday morning. I didn't pack an underwear, so we went on a hunt for an H&M. Good sale, back in the saddle. We stopped off to eat a bunch of stuff along the way including bitterballen, frites w/ mayo and a crepe.

We stopped into their new library which is behind the Botel and found we could check email on an iMac.

On Friday we went to the Eastern Docklands, one of the most impressive social living spaces in the world.

Aaron worked on a project for the architect who built this piece of he project.

The next morning we had to get up at 4am to catch our flight to Berlin. Ouch.
We left our things at the hostel and then headed over to Alexanderplatz, which is where the big TV tower is in the old east Berlin.

We walked around for a bit, saw the Berliner Dom, the Reichstag building, Potsdamer Platz, Berliner Philharmonie and The Brandenburg Gate. You know, we hit all the highlights.

What was amazing is putting everything this city has gone through in perspective. I knew very little about Berlin, and felt like one of those dumb Americans on TV who can't identify Iraq on a map.

Aaron took us to see the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, which was the most amazing thing we saw in Berlin. Aaron studied under the architect of the memorial.

We went back to the hostel to have a nap.

Aaron suggested we head over to Kollwitzplatz back on the east side for a good meal. He found out about Gugelhof, an Alsatian restaurant, in one of our travel guides. I am glad he did. We had a steak with a potato au gratin dish that was amazing. I had a berry tart that had so much flavor, I can still taste it.

When we left the restaurant, we just started walking with no new destination in mind. We turned a corner, and saw what looked to be a 100 year old dive bar. We had no idea what was behind the door, but I needed in.

Aaron and I had stepped into another world. The bartender was a 5'10 with long blond hair, rolled up with a Russian winter hat on. We thought she may be a burlesque dancer. The place was candle lit and something like Robert Johnson or Ledbelly played on the stereo. This may be the coolest bar in the world.

The next morning we got up and casually walked through Potsdamer Platz before getting Aaron to hi train. After Aaron left, I waited in a two hour line to get to the top of the the Reichstag building.

I went back to the hostel to pick up my stuff before heading back to the airport, for a night back in Amsterdam.

Got back to the Botel at 1am, and everything had been shut down. At least I had a clean bed and a warm shower!

So this is how the story ends...except for one more amazing thing. After I check my luggage at the airport and get my boarding pass, I go get a cup of coffee and who do I see? Jeff Tweedy. We've already made eye contact, so I had to talk to him. Wilco is one of my all time favorite bands. Just a few words, and a good luck in travels. Then off to my plane.

Susie and I have been talking about getting a pet for a long time. A real long time.
We aren't able to have a dog right now and we're both allergic to cats.

We went to the pet store around the corner from our house.
Once the bunny was in Susie's arms, it was over. This bunny had to be ours.

We don't have a name for it.

but it just came.

and so I am going to leave. I leave for Amsterdam in like 72 hours.

Popeye's and PPC

I am rocking the paid search advertising on this blog because I figure why not? This is where Google gets 99% of their money from, and alot of people don't understand how the process works. I have worked around PPC key word buying for more than 4 years now but wanted to know exactly how they place the words that they do.

Last week, I blogged about the Popeye's chicken by my old apt on 2nd ave closing.
Today I see this ad:

Weird.
What's even weirder is it takes you to a a Yahoo store that sells Chicken nick nacks, not even an official Popeye's chicken site?

As I started this blog post, I went back to check something and then saw this ad:

A shoutout and a garbage can

First, Fred gives me
a shout out on his blog.

Second, I had become obsessed with getting a new garbage can for the kitchen that had a pedal. Closed tops on garbage cans are crucial. Susie had a plastic one with a spinning top that was always awkward to work with. When I cook meat, I need to get that packaging in the garbage ASAP, and the one we had was just not working.
We went to Bed Bath and Beyond on 6th avenue (shopping here is a New Yorker right of passage), and I had a coupon for 20% off that had expired. Coupons for B,B,B never really expire. We walked in, and there she was, for $60!

And a 20% off coupon making her $48. I was so excited.
Until I just checked Amazon that is...
Whatever, its a great garbage can, and this is what my life has reduced itself to.

I love that chicken from Popyes

I just wrote about a few experiences I had in the past week that were directly tied to events from my past. Happy times.

I also have to write about Popeyes, and specifically the Popeyes that was 2 blocks down from the apartment I lived in the East Village.
We were walking back to the train after dinner tonight, and I'd noticed it had closed.

Now I'd lived close to a Popeyes in San Francisco too. I can't say I'd eat the stuff regularly, but when I wanted some spicy fried chicken and some red beans and rice, I'd go.

There is a funny story behind my Popeyes semi-obsession. My first job out of college was at a big ad firm in Houston. Popeyes was a client. I was asked to help with a store launch and wear a costume at a store opening. When I started to hesitate, I was told that I was an intern and had to do what they say. I looked at the two costumes, one was Popeye and one was a chicken. I said that they probably would not fit.

We get out to the location and I am told to change into the Popeye costume in the men's room and then head outside to flag down traffic. This is what I took out student loans and got a marketing degree for?

The costume didn't fit. I open the door, holding the Popeye head under my arm so the boss would believe me. There was a little kid there seeing a half naked man holding a Popeye head. He started to scream his head off. I said 'see! - I told you it would not fit.' She started screaming, knocked on the door to the woman's room and said - "You have to switch costumes, you're Popeye now, Josef, you be the chicken. " I said this costume won't fit either. I was told to try, and had the same issue.

Needless to say, I never really recovered from this at this firm. I ended up moving to San Francisco a month later. Every time I pass a Popeye's I can't help but think of this experience. I wasn't the only person eating at this East Village Popeyes, but I think its funny that two months after I leave the neighborhood, it closed.

This was a big week.

We went to see Lucinda play Car Wheels at Town Hall.
She was great. I saw her for my first time 10 years ago when she put Car Wheels out.

Wednesday took us back to the East Village for Patrick Wolf at Webster. I am surprised that he is not bigger. When people ask me what he sounds like I say Speak and Spell era Depeche Mode meets Bright Eyes.

Nate and Alison were back in town on Thursday. No, I am not moving back to San Francisco anytime soon. Unless like a dude calls and offers like $250k or something...

On Friday we went to visit Jason and Kori and to hang with Magnolia in Connecticut. She's a fully formed little person now. We've been friends since 2001 in San Francisco and its great to see how far we've all come.

I got a new personal laptop and we finally have wireless internet service from Verizon. Time Warner Cable couldn't figure out how to give us service after 2 months, so we found someone else.

We're now a 3 laptop home.

I had to configure my computer by downloading Firefox, iTunes, a Flash plugin, Flickr uploader, add to Bloglines and Delicio.us buttons, etc. The coolest thing though was opting out of all major ad network cookies thru this website.
This is what a website with alot of advertising now looks like to me.

Its been a crappy couple of weeks. Work stuff is bumming me out. And TW Cable won't give me cable internets and thats a bummer too. I've wasted so much time trying to get the innernets.

I had a horrible accounting mid term on Friday morning.
After class we went and had Mexican food at our favorite place and then went to the bar we met at.

My friend Marshall's CD was in the juke box.

We took a cab home.

On Saturday, I had school again.
Then we met up in the 'burg for pizza and calzone.

We went to Dumont for brunch today. They have the best burgers in Brooklyn. Maybe all of NYC?

If work doesn't work out, I may go into fixing lat's. That's cool.

I've played with alot of nice dogs today. Landlord won't let us have a dog. There are three BTs at this bar I am using the innnernets at. They are playing Steely Dan and Supertramp.

I am in heaven.

Once I finish my work, we're going to see The Darjeeling Limited. I was in India one year ago this weekend. I wish I could go back. But I have to go do other things right now.

I just saw Modest Mouse for the 8th or 9th time in the last 10 years. They were playing down the street from my new house with Ms. Susie. Funny thing is, Ms. Susie HATES MM. Something about Seattle and seeing four bad shows. MM are inconsistent with their shows. I give up on them for years at a time.

I’ve probably seen this band more over a longer period of time then any other band I’ve ever followed. Wilco would be a close 2nd, but given how many shows they’ve screwed me over since moving to NYC, they don’t count. And Spoon doesn’t count because I used to see them 2-3 times a month when I lived in Austin and all 10 SXSW I’ve been too. And Mates of State don't count because I saw 12 shows in a row when I was on tour with them.

The first time I saw them was at Emo’s in June of 1998. I went with Melissa who originally tipped me off to them. I was dating L, and as about to turn 21, and move to England in August. Was this the last show I illegally drank at? Anyway, it was really hot, and Issac decided to start the show around midnight. At 2 am, they rip into ‘Do The Cockroach’ and the audience levitated. Seriously levitated. It was the most spiritual live concert experience I’ve ever had.

The next significant time I saw them was at the Filmore in San Francisco. They sucked. I was working at Napster, and went with Brandon. I said I would never see them again. He called me a dick.

I listened to the Moon over Antarctica a little when it originally came out and I was working at Napster. The Nissan commercial was a huge turn off. Their music used to sell a MINIVAN?!? But I have to hand it to Tiny City Made of Ashes from that record. They was my favorite part of tonight's show.

Next time I saw them was on Sept 10, 2001.
I went to see them at Warfield with Melissa. They had video of planes crashing and buildings falling during 3rd Planet. The lyrics 'this how the world began, this is how the world will end' was so cryptic. I had a cold or something and had planned on calling in sick to Napster the next day. Went to bed with a really weird feeling. Those images were so intense. Woke up to my sister calling me and crying. You know what happened the next day. Horrible.

Next significant time I saw them was in Berkeley as part of the Cake 'Ultimate Sunshine' tour. They were on the bill with the Flaming Lips. I was dating a different L and was about to move to LA to work for Warner Bros. Issac was being a dick and said all these bands on the bill sucked. I thought that was funny. They debuted ‘The Good Times are Killing Me’ a year and a half before their next record was released. When that record came out 'Float On’ became a hit.

The week I moved to NYC Modest Mouse was playing Radio City Music Hall where my new offices happened to be as well. Aaron had just started dating Monica, and they were there too. The show was just ok. They should have played somewhere else. I ran into A+M on the subway leaving the show. Aaron and I can always find each other. That was the first time I met Monica as well.

With the co habitation, job thing and school starting, MM is there at pretty much every life inflection point. We’ll all HAVE to float on. There is no other option.

I watch the Simpsons pretty much every night when I get home from work. Recently, I realized that that I knew Ms. Krabappel's voice, but just couldn't place it.

Being a huge fan of the Bob Newhart show (I am currently in the middle of Season 4 on DVD), I was finally able to connect that Carol, Bob's secretary, is the voice of Edna Krabappel, Bart Simpson's teacher.

Why it took me so long to figure this out...I don't know.

We had dinner last night, and on the desert board I saw that they had Blueberry Pie. I told the waiter, 'I sure would like some of that' but needless to say, they were out. I had been thinking about that blueberry pie for my entire meal.

So we leave the place and start to head home thru the East Village, planning on stopping at a few of the bakeries. None have the pie. There was a crazy foaming at the mouth guy at one bakery who volunteered that he used to pick blueberries as a child. I looked him in the eye and said 'I just want some blueberry pie dude, I don't care what you used to do' and started for the exit. He responded with 'thanks for the compliment.' Whatever, freak.

I was a man on a mission.

When we got home, we started calling around to diners and found a place a few blocks from my house. Yes, The Gramercy Cafe had the pie! We were on our way.

I could end my weekend a happy man. I sure do love me some Blueberry Pie.

Austin is a really great place. Most people I know in NYC only know Austin because of SXSW or now ACL. Austin is kind of a gross place when the foreigners descend en masse.

We basically camped out at the San Jose for 4 days, swam and ate every egg and piece of beef we could get our hands on. It was mostly overcast or rainy, so that kept the heat down.

I've hated every cell phone I ever got from Sprint, and always hated the day I had to get a new one because I always felt I was going to get ripped off. But calls connected, no matter where I was. I've moved alot since I got my Sprint account post college.

I've never owned a Mac, but my little lady, dad and a few informed friends swear by Jobs, his software and hardware. The things just work. I've owned 4 ipods (2 paid for - 2 freebees - one stolen, one left on a plane, and 2 that still work)

So on Friday, I decided what the hey, I'll go down to the ATT&T store 6 blocks from my house, wait and see. If I get one, I do, if I don't I don't.

Cell phone stores are notoriously crap. There was very little movement in the hour I had waited. No matter how crazy Apple stores are, you can get your product fast. Jobs knows retail. I found out the crazies who waited in line for days had cleared at the Apple store in SoHo and decided to head over there. Lock and loaded, no turning back dude.

I had dinner plans, so didn't jump on the set up ASAP. Got home and activated the account via iTunes. No dice, bed time, it'll work itself out while I sleep. I woke up the next morning, account activated, problem solved.

I now have 2 cell phone plans. I'll cancel Sprint after I feel enough of my regular peeps have the new number. I'll pay the early termination fee and most sadly, lose my San Francisco based number. The number that has defined me during my 20s. I turned 30 last week. New decade, new number. A NYC based number. A big boy number.

So I played with the phone all day yesterday. And it does everything I want it to do. And its the best thing I've ever bought. And it's worth more than what I paid for it (its worth closer to the price of a good lap top - but if it cost that much, I probably wouldn't have bought it)

I can take pictures and drop them into my flickr account. Text, instant email, call people, read my Bloglines (much better when I am in a wi-fi zone - EDGE SUCKS), listen to the Talking Heads, watch some random free crap I found in ITunes, listen to an NPR podcast, get weather reports from all over the country, check stock reports, all pretty much by dragging my finger across a screen. I am not as excited for this (even though its great), but what the future holds. This is the beginning of the on the go, always connected device.

And if that scares you, like in a 1984 kind of way, you can always turn the thing off.

Here is my review on Chowhound. There have been 8 comments so far. Pictures below.

Went to Blue Hill last night to celebrate my 30th. The atmosphere was pleasant, it was nice to be out of NYC and on a farm.

We each ordered the 3 course tasting. I was about to jump at the Farmer's 7 course tasting where the menu is prepared just for you and off menu, but the entire table has to order that way.

I started with a yummy pickled ramp gin martini. Had never had anything like this before.
First two tasters were a pork breaded cutlet on a stick, and a mini 'burger' of beat paste on crunchy dough.

We then received mixed greens with a 'farmers' egg - something they are known for. Dreamy medium boiled then breaded deep fried egg. Have no idea how they did this, amazing.

Next I had the hake in pea and asparagus sauce. This was the some of the best piece of fish I have ever eaten. The peas were sweet and the asparagus was crunchy. When i had eaten most of the solids, I has a nice fresh green fish soup. My girlfriend has the gnocchi with the morels. She said it was great.

By this time, we had ordered a half bottle of the Borarolo. A nice complement (I like bold wines), but a bit spend-y for a half bottle ($52).

Next up was the third course: she had the chicken and I had the veal. Her chicken was succulent, and I had never had a chicken breast as dense as this before. Such strong flavor and a nice crisp on the skin.

But oh no - my veal. Center was really tough. I confirmed with the presentation waiter that this was in fact the veal, and he could see that I was only eating around the center, so he took it away, handed me a menu and said - select something else with no hesitation. I felt bad, given you see everything your about to eat as you drive in. So to think, this was messed up somewhere along the way to end up as waste didn't sit well with me. I will probably never eat veal again.

The veal was replaced with the Berkshire pork. Quite tasty, and dense meat (like the chicken) with a side of pork belly/bacon? The pork was over salted (and I like salty pork) and the belly/bacon was cold. The meat was on top of something like hominy that had very little flavor. Over all, the two 'land' proteins were a disappointment.

For desert I had a rhubarb compote with goat cheese and fresh honey. Great flavor profile. The cheese was almost like ice cream (waitress called it their cheesecake). We also had cappuccinos, which were also excellent.

Given the effort to get there, and the disappointment in the two proteins, it will be a long time before we will go back. I am really happy we went, and the meal will definitely be something to remember, just wish the middle of the meal hadn't been derailed.

I just dumped 2 weeks worth of cell phone pictures into flickr. We've been doing tons of stuff given how nice the weather had been.

I saw the Faint the Sunday before Memorial Day. I hadn't seen them since they opened for No Doubt with Nissa in San Jose.

We went to Moncia's birthday/going away party last Saturday. They're moving to Boston because she got into Harvard.

I had an NYU reception on Tuesday and here is a picture of the presidential bathroom.

Since I was in the west village, the little lady and I went to Eno for dinner. Their egg truffle toast is to die for.

Wednesday night, we made meatballs and cabbage.

And given that Katz's may close soon, and I was in the LES on Thursday, I decided to bury the hatchet with the place and get my meat on. I got in a fight with their staff about 5 years ago and vowed never to go back. Really dumb, and I am happy to 'rediscover' the place.

This really is some of the yummiest beef I have ever had. There was so much meat I had the 2nd half for lunch the next day.

Susie and I had dinner at Dukes on Friday.

I didn't get a picture of it, but had the lobster roll at Buchon on Saturday. Considering they usually cost 20 bones at most NYC restaurants, this was a deal at $15 at a Keller establishment.

And today...one of my favorite food outings in NYC - The Big Apple BBQ festival. It's great because Salt Lick comes up all the way from Texas!

After reviewing the pictures from all of the good food I've had in the past week, I will need to go on a diet before we head to Texas the first week in July.

We just got back from California where we saw some good friends, ate some good food, and just palled around in the sun. The weather went from ok/crappy to great. But, I prefer ok/crappy out there to ok/crappy here (snow in April anyone?!?)

We scored tickets to Muse, White Stripes (both at MSG) and The Faint this morning. We're going to see Patrick Wolf, Arcade Fire and Laura Viers in the next 2 weeks. And the Wilco presale for the small show in Greenpoint is next week, so I hope I get into that show as well.

Mostly, old favorites, bands I've seen quite a lot, but should make for an interesting summer, given that most shows haven't even been announced.

I tried to plant some seeds in my little plot of land on the patio last spring. It didn't really take. This being the east village, god knows what's really in that dirt.

Susie had been buying all sorts of great indoor plants for her place and we had been going through the Union Square green market most weekends since the weather has turned (somewhat) nice. I decided I would put some things in pots and do it up right this spring.

Here's the big view:

I got 2 ivys, 2 dahlias and a geranium. I grew up with geraniums and don't really like them, but they sure do grow well, so I decided I just wanted something that would work.

Ivy #1 - named Otto.

Dahlia #1 - forgot her name.

This Dahlia and ivy were planted together. The ivy's name is Peanut, but I forget what what the 2nd dalia is called.

Geranium - named Gladis

Let's hope these grow into beautiful flowers this year.

On a side note, I took this picture of Tesla in front of a church on the west side last weekend when we were flea market shopping. Thought it was interesting having just recently watched The Prestige. Much better than the Illusionist. Also funny to see a picture of a mad scientist in front of a church.

Last but not least, another bird shat on me yesterday while walking through the west village. 2 times in the past 3 weeks. Should I just stay in, or accept that I will get shit on in life? The Italians think its a sign of good luck. Bring it, cause this is just too weird. No staying in for me. Good luck, I'm ready for you!

I am still trying to score kind of blue on vinyl, but this will suffice.

Now that its springy in NYC, Susie and I scour the out door fairs (her for furniture, me for crap, and seriously I mean crap). I am buying old vinyl. There is tons of jazz and soul (and the white folks who do soul like Burt and the Bee Gees) but not finding much rock (besides of the CCR, Neil Young and Stones I already got).

So I guess I should start blogging about all the cool crap I'm buying, and other blog posts I find interesting. And continue with the food I eats. Finally, a focus for this thing?

New York is kind of springy today, ahead of a 'noreaster' thats set to hit tonight and throw us back into the arms of winter.
This morning, after brunch, I picked up the book I've been reading called Still Life with Woodpecker by Tom Robbins and sat outside on my patio. People in my building have been throwing bird seed onto my patio, so of course there is some fresh bird doo I was trying to avoid while sitting there reading.

I was reading the part where the protagonist explains how you can make a bomb using bird poo, so I'm like great - its all around me.

I decided I would like an iced coffee and would like to continue reading in Union Square park, so I moved the day's activities there. Away from the bird shit on my patio.

The park was full of people celebrating spring, and I settled on a bench with my iced coffee to continue reading.

And that's when what I had been trying to avoid hit me. Yes, a bird shat right on me.

Eggs and bunny celebration

Susie and I had some people over to celebrate the holiday.

I boilded some eggs for folks to paint.

I made 2 egg pies. One with salami and a sharp pecorino and another veggie made with mushrooms, spinich and shallots.

Susie made a great potato salad with arugula and grey poupon. So good.
We also served a green salad and a fruit salad. So salady!

Last night the little lady took me to New Jersey to see The Decemberists. I had never been a fan thinking that Colin just was a poor man's Ben Gibbard with John Vanderslice's voice doing a bad They Might Be Giants thing. I had seen them at Noise Pop 2004 in San Francisco at the Great American Music Hall. At that time I thought, "These guys are just too dorky - I can never like them." Next time I saw them was when Hari got me into the Death Cab Central park show as a VIP. Given my previous impression, I didn't really pay attention.

Then, along came Susie. She's a fan.

I really have no room to talk about someone being too dorky. Last night was the first time I really paid attention to their live show. I had given them a second chance after listening to (and get this - enjoying) 'The Crane Wife.' I'm glad I was treated to the show. We had a great time, had great seats and the crowd was high energy. Its a damn shame this isn't top 40 music, cause it deserves to be all over the radio (whatever that is).

Rock and Roll Hall of fame: Definitive CRAP

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announced their Definitive 200 list today.
This list might work if you are a catalog buyer for Wal*Mart and you only have room to stock 200 titles for the most mainstream of audiences, but should not be a list for people who even slightly know music. The list is being marketed as ‘do you need to fill in your collection.’ That’s fine if you’re thinking ‘oh, I did need some more CRAP in my collection.’

Some huge titles were left off the list: Yankee Hotel Foxtrot OR Being There, London Calling OR anything by The Clash, anything by the Ramones, AND White Light/ White Heat. Also, look at where David Bowie, Aretha Franklin and Steely Dan end up at the bottom of the list. But the Dixie Chicks? All over the place.

I found this on someone else's flickr and decided to jack it.

That's me standing and singing right behind the girl from the Arcade Fire. That was a magical show, and this is an eerie picture. I look like a ghost.

The night before, Susie took us to see the Apples in Stereo. Spin magazine was there and interviewed me. I used a co-workers name and made up what line of work I was in cause I didn't want the uh, extra attention.
