The Decemberists

Last night the little lady took me to New Jersey to see The Decemberists. I had never been a fan thinking that Colin just was a poor man's Ben Gibbard with John Vanderslice's voice doing a bad They Might Be Giants thing. I had seen them at Noise Pop 2004 in San Francisco at the Great American Music Hall. At that time I thought, "These guys are just too dorky - I can never like them." Next time I saw them was when Hari got me into the Death Cab Central park show as a VIP. Given my previous impression, I didn't really pay attention.

Then, along came Susie. She's a fan.

decemberists jersy city 3_21

I really have no room to talk about someone being too dorky. Last night was the first time I really paid attention to their live show. I had given them a second chance after listening to (and get this - enjoying) 'The Crane Wife.' I'm glad I was treated to the show. We had a great time, had great seats and the crowd was high energy. Its a damn shame this isn't top 40 music, cause it deserves to be all over the radio (whatever that is).

THE BABY LIVES

Just got this email from a friend who commutes in Silicon Valley.

In a message dated 3/20/2007 12:51:58 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time, Kason1 writes:
Hey-

didn't you used to have a Waterloo Records sticker on your old car in CA - the little orange Sentra?

If so, I saw that car the other day driving across the Dumbarton Bridge... for a weird second I thought it would be you driving it. Was disappointed when I remembered you live 3000 miles away :)

hope things are going well!

Ramen!

My picture made it into the Midtown Lunch Ramen week wrap up!
I am so thankful to Midtown Lunch for tipping me off on decent lunch eats, as midtown NYC is a lunch wasteland.

Rock and Roll Hall of fame: Definitive CRAP

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announced their Definitive 200 list today.
This list might work if you are a catalog buyer for Wal*Mart and you only have room to stock 200 titles for the most mainstream of audiences, but should not be a list for people who even slightly know music. The list is being marketed as ‘do you need to fill in your collection.’ That’s fine if you’re thinking ‘oh, I did need some more CRAP in my collection.’

Some huge titles were left off the list: Yankee Hotel Foxtrot OR Being There, London Calling OR anything by The Clash, anything by the Ramones, AND White Light/ White Heat. Also, look at where David Bowie, Aretha Franklin and Steely Dan end up at the bottom of the list. But the Dixie Chicks? All over the place.

Here’s the list – with my commentary attached.

1 BEATLES SGT. PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND not their best - should be rubber soul or revolver
2 PINK FLOYD DARK SIDE OF THE MOON this album sux.

The Apples in Arcade/Stereo on Fire.

I found this on someone else's flickr and decided to jack it.

me n arcade fire

That's me standing and singing right behind the girl from the Arcade Fire. That was a magical show, and this is an eerie picture. I look like a ghost.

The night before, Susie took us to see the Apples in Stereo. Spin magazine was there and interviewed me. I used a co-workers name and made up what line of work I was in cause I didn't want the uh, extra attention.
Here's a link to the picture and article.

Friday.

We went to the Dog show to see us some PPFLs

First of all, it's really, really cold outside today

Susie and I went to the 131st annual Westminster dog show last night at Madison Square Garden.
What's great about this show, if you get there early enough you can walk around and mingle with the talent in the bench section.

I turn my camera phone on (and general update)

Back in January I went to Vegas for CES. I mentioned that here before, but I never posted pictures. I had my olde timey camera, but wasn't feeling it...I was dog tired from all the work (and play, heh). I took a few cell phone pictures, which always look crappy, but will provide some memories.

I took a trip to olde Vegas because new Vegas is so expensive and cheesy. Turns out, they've killed half of what you see in the pictures (the smoking cowboy, etc.) and the Horseshoe has turned into something else. they also placed a huge concrete dome over the area to make an open air mall. Basically an open air mall of shit.
Here are a few neon signs, but the area is really sad. Our cab driver said that they are about to renovate the area and make it all new Vegas-y. The days of Elvis and the rat Pack are long gone.

I was staying at the Saharah, which is cheap and gross, and I love it. The Beatles played there. And they have $5 tables, which are hard to find in new Vegas. It's basically the last of olde Vegas, but close to new Vegas. It'll prob be gone or renovated in 5 years.

The Saharah also had a cheesy 60s cover band, which ruled.
vegas lounge band

Susie and I went to see Peter Bjorn and John at the Bowery Ball room last week. We scored a table up top, so we got to relax and not have to deal with the potential of a shithead being a shithead right by us.
peter bjorn john
We liked the show, even through the blogosphere seemed not to. And the whistling on Young Folks was canned. I didn't really care.
peter bjorn john
The last cell phone picture is of the dancing cupcakes from the Cupcake Cafe on 18th street. We had a snack there this weekend when we went shopping. For some reason I was craving butter cream, so we ended up here for a good cupcake.

butta cream

We're going to the Westminster Dog show tonight at Madison Square Garden. The Boston Terrier was beat out by a poodle (geez louise) in his category last night, so no BT's in the best off show category. We'll be in the nosebleeds, but still should be fun.

But I love dogs.

I'll be posting some pics from the road trip out to California in the next few posts. Susie and I took all types. Camera phone pics, dig camera pics and old school cannon ae 1 pics. We'll upload to flickr and post to the blog.
Highlights include Madonna Inn, In and Out, Hearst Castle and
Tito's Tacos. I love Tito's Tacos.

2006 music

I am debating making comps for the crew this year like I have in years past.
Everyone has an ipod chock full o good tunes...why would anyone want a piece of plastic I've dropped 19 more onto? Maybe I should keep it going...just to have a nice keepsake, as things become more fluid, digital and cold.

The year in music...here is the top 11 I've submitted to AOL. I based this list on bands who put out a new record AND I got to see live. I had to limit it to 11.

Muse
Band of Horses
Islands
Of Montreal
Arctic Monkeys
The Raconteurs
M Ward
Mates of State
The Thermals
Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin
CSS

As far as the CD - I've come up with playlist of 26 songs. I need to pair down as a CD will only hold about 18.

I think Hot Chip and Arctic Monkeys may be over exposed, so I should save room for songs that didn't get at much blog love, like Chin Up Chin Up and Someone Still Loves you Boris Yeltsen.

I also have to keep The Thermals, The French Kicks, Film School, Lilys and the Islands, as these songs rule so hard and I listened to them over and over again ( like a monkey with a minuture symbol).
Mates of State stay too, cause they give me a shout out at the beginning of the song.

If I am to make the comp - I want to know what you think, and what I HAVE to keep.

Thanks.

I turn my camera on

I've been feeling that the more digital we become, the more cold the world becomes. I wanted something more analog in my life, besides the record player I own and use.

I also wanted a camera that sounded cool when I took pictures.
So I found a Canon AE1 Program camera on ebay, after looking high and low for something that would not set me back too much and something I’d actually use.

I had no idea how to load the film so the first test roll was a bust.
I figured out how to load the film, but wanted to know if thing would work, so I just walked around the neighborhood and took pictures of all of the neat signs I walk by on a regular basis. Luckily, the drug store burns the negatives onto disk, so this will work for the blog as well.

Here are the 1st set of pictures from my new camera (new to me, 30 years old really)
