Hollaback Girl:
The Urban Dictionary definition says that this is a girl who is willing to be treated like a doormat; allowing guys to do what they want with her and who will just wait for them to "holla back" at her.
Watching Gwen’s new video for Hollaback Girl got me thinking about how amazing this record has been marketed. Sure the music and image thing are progressive, interesting, weird, and (back to the music) good, the way Gwen has marketed herself through product alignment is pretty amazing. I can’t think of another pop star that’s done it this well.
It’s pop music, so let’s give up on the whole ‘sell out’ thing. She’s not pushing products that aren’t modern or ‘her.’ The push is also relatively subtle. Sure Lil Jon is making mad coin on Crunk Juice, and even named his new record ‘Crunk Juice’ to promo the crap, but the whole thing is overt, crude and low margin (which also fits Lil Jon’s image).
So Gwen names her record Love, Angel, Music, Baby, the aconym being L.A.M.B., which also happens to be the clothing line she launched around the time of the record. Seems every other hipster cutie on the subway has a LAMB bag . So everyone carrying these bags, is advertising for the record. Genius.
Back to the video (click above and watch it if you haven’t seen it). Gwen takes a minute to snap a picture of her 'Harajuku Girls' posse (that’s a whole other thing, weird). That’s not just any camera though. It’s the one that she custom designed for HP. So the video that is now EVERYWHERE is also an ad for her camera. Genius.
.
‘Hollaback Girl’ gets stuck in your head, and now you want the ring tone you see advertised on your AIM buddy list.
Cingular has the exclusive on the ringtone. So if you don’t use Cingular, you don’t get her shit.
I guess the only downer here is ‘her shit’ isn’t pointed out on her website . It’s Bananas… B-A-N-A-N-A-S.

Gonna give you every inch of my love
I cashed in all of my chips and made it onto the set where Robert Plant was filming a session. (I will post the link once it goes live). I was 10 feet away as he sang a revamped 'Black Dog.' A real once in a life time thing with the king of all rock stars.
Asking Robert to sign the Zep vinyls was one of the most nerve wrecking things I’ve ever done. I was kind of bumbling as he signed the vinyl, didn’t know what to say but ‘thank you’ and off he was.
Other rock and roll highlights this week:
Mon: Live taping of Dave Matthews. I know, right?
Tues: Instore with Spoon for Gimmie Fiction. The Virgin Union Sq. was packed. I think this is going to be the big record for these guys.
Wed: Side stage for Weezer. Show rocked, as always. But, I was probably the oldest person there. How did that happen?
Thur: Aaron came over and we listened to records. I then took the new Spoon to Tye’s gig and made him play 2 cuts off of Gimmie Fiction.
Fri: I was in the same room as Sean Lennon for about 20 minutes at my friend Maggie’s art opening. He wears the same kind of glasses as his father did. And Diesel jeans. Afterwards I went to see Built to Spill with Faycat . Great show.

Cause Jenny's got a big olde butt
I took Jen (from SF) to Burger Joint, a super secret low key burger joint in the Paker Maridian for dinner tonight. You just kind of have to know where it is to get there. 2 AMAZING cheese burgers, fries and 2 beers for $23.
We (finally) get a seat after we order our food at the counter. All of these weird dudes in suits and earpieces are there. We're sitting there shooting the shit, and I look up and ask Jen, "Is that J.Lo's butt? Cause that's Marc Anthony next to it" J.Lo's butt was basically in Jen's face (the BJ is SMALL - it is NYC). They walk out, and all the weird dudes in suits also leave. We enjoyed our burgers and brews in peace. Fun fun.

High school reunion brunch.
Ah Bellaire. Ah New York City.
I called the people I still know from high school who live in NYC and asked them to come over for brunch. I served 2 kinds of quiches (spinach and prosciutto & gruyere), salad and rosemary fingerling potatoes. Twas tre yum.
